ZwareMetalen.com Brace yourself, Darkness is Coming (heeft die vogel drie ogen? Het zou zomaar kunnen). Maurice Sas is tegenwoordig het enige vaste bandlid van Aratron, de band die al eerder besproken werd op Zware Metalen. De demo’s Horrifying Visions en The Recovery liggen nog vrij vers in het geheugen. Het is meteen schrikken bij het aanhoren van de eerste echte langspeler van Aratron. Speelden deze mannen in het verleden geen death metal met Obituary en Grave-grooves? Ja toch? Niets van dat op Darkness is Coming, vergeet het maar. Dit is zowaar Zweedse black metal van de brute soort geworden. De keelklanken gaan nog steeds diep bij wijlen, maar even vaak raspend en genepen. Instrumentaal is het een mengeling van oudere Belphegor en Luciferion (hier en daar ook wat Setherial/Marduk), met tussenstukken die terug doen denken aan de stampende death metal van de demo’s. Het is gevarieerd en opzwepend geworden, met een gezonde variatie aan black en death, gemoedelijk headbangmateriaal en jetstijl black metaltrillingen. Enkel de blikkerige drumsound mocht wat organischer, voor de rest ga ik niet te veel klagen. Score: 75/100 __________________________________________________ Lords of Metal Aratron is het project van Maurice Sas, waar hij andere mensen bij betrekt om zijn lacunes in te vullen. En dan wel het liefst de mensen waar hij in het verleden al goed mee heeft gewerkt. In 2013 hoorde we het laatste teken van leven van de band, in de vorm van ‘The Recovery’, waar zanger Ronald van Baren ook al deel van uit maakte. Ze worden aangevuld door drummer Damiën Kerpentier (Sephiroth) en rockabilly gitarist Michel Wijngaard (Razzle Dazzle, maar vroeger met Maurice in Obtruncation) speelt op zes van de acht nummers de gitaarsolo’s. De rest is dus door Maurice Sas gedaan, alsook de teksten en artwork. Zo’n jongen wil je wel in je band hebben, dus. Hij weet een schijf neer te zetten met death metal die ook menig black metal muzikant en fan zou kunnen behagen, zonder daar per se concessies aan te doen. Ik moet zeggen dat de schijf een beetje voorzichtig uit de startblokken komt. Niet soft of afwachtend, maar het lijkt alsof in het begin toch een beetje de kat uit de boom wordt gekeken. En dat is zonde, want verderop valt er heel wat te beleven. Met name drummer Damiën laat zien naast een beest ook bijzonder veelzijdig te zijn. En dat is waar Aratron duidelijk om vraagt. De zang geldt eigenlijk hetzelfde voor, in het begin is het een zesje, later imponeert hij echt stevig, met hier en daar een take die wegens een beetje luchtgebrek misschien nog wel een keer over had gekund, maar over het geheel gezien indrukwekkend. En zo is de hele schijf, zonder echt grote muzikale verrassingen wordt je toch vrijwel de hele looptijd geboeid door het geweld en de melodielijnen die daar doorheen geweven worden, door muzikanten die eens geijkte patronen los durven te laten. Ik zie geen enkele reden waarom dit niet naar een volwaardige bezetting op zoek zou kunnen gaan. Of met een sologitarist erbij in deze bezetting, liever nog. Score: 84/100 __________________________________________________ Wings of Death Hoewel Aratron al een tijdje bestaat - sinds 2008, met daarvoor een korte periode van 2000 tot 2002 - is de band nog niet heel actief geweest qua releases. Slechts twee demo's / promo's sieren de figuurlijke platenkast. Daar komt eind 2016, vrij verrassend, dan een heuse full length bij: Darkness Is Coming. Ik schreef hierboven band, maar eigenlijk is Aratron het project (of gewoon eenmansband?) van snarenplukker Maurice Sas, die met behulp van bevriende muzikanten dit album in elkaar heeft gesleuteld. Overigens is Maurice zelf ook compleet verantwoordelijk voor het gehele concept en de aankleding ervan, inclusief alle teksten. Qua muziek blijkt Aratron stijlvast, de muziek ligt in het verlengde van de eerder verschenen demo's (waarvan Recovery in 2013 ook hier besproken is). Daarbij zou ik het houden op overwegend black metal, aangevuld met death metal-invloeden. Wanneer opener The Dark Curse tot mij is doorgedrongen denk ik direct met een black metalband van doen te hebben, maar dat blijkt uiteindelijk niet honderd procent juist. De felle drums (inclusief blasts), de krijsende vocalen en de riffs doen mij in die richting denken. Waarbij me eigenlijk ook opvalt hoe prominent de bas in het totaalplaatje te voorschijn komt. Dat mag ik wel! Verder is de productie lekker helder: alles is goed te volgen, zonder afbreuk te doen aan de rauwheid van het extreme genre. Aangekomen bij Slow Decay (inderdaad slow...) horen we een andere kant van Aratron. Daar waar de opener er lekker vlot en heftig vandoor ging, legt deze track de nadruk op kracht en groove. Het middentempo past de band blijkbaar ook, wat zeg ik, misschien nog wel beter. Ik vind dit echt een aangenaam loom, bijna slepend nummer, waarin het gitaarwerk alle ruimte krijgt om uit te blinken. Wat een heerlijk logge riffs zijn hier te horen! Dit blijkt echter wel een uitzondering, want nummers als Primal Shrine, Raise The Black, en vooral The Outsider en Driven By Evil (twee keer hallo Marduk) gaan echt meer nadrukkelijk richting ziedende black, met z'n opgefokte tempo's. Nou kan ik dat op zich op z'n tijd prima smaken, maar het is juist de afwisseling die me boeit. Een nummer als Primal Shrine voorziet gedeeltelijk in die behoefte vanwege het 'rustiger' middenstuk. Gelukkig zijn er zo nog wel een paar fragmenten te horen die de agressieve stukken op aangename wijze onderbreken. Afsluiter The Glory Of Chaos is daar een goed voorbeeld van. Noem het black, noem het death, of een combinatie ervan, Aratron is er in elk geval in geslaagd om een verdomd agressief potje muziek op schijf vast te laten leggen. Dit is muziek waarbij het lastig stilzitten is; niet handig wanneer je er een stukje over wil tikken. Ik krijg hier wel energie van, al ben ik normaal helemaal niet zo van 'alleen maar' snelle muziek. Hier werkt het in elk geval! __________________________________________________ White Room Vaak worden computerspellen niet als positief opgevat voor de huidige muziekscène. De jeugd zou te veel daarmee bezig zijn in plaats van muziek te maken en bezoeken. Toch kan het ook inspirerend werken. De Nederlandse metalband Aratron, welke zich laat inspireren door black en death metal, ontleent de titel van zijn eerste langspeler hieraan. Darkness Is Coming komt uit in eigen beheer. In acht nummers laten Maurice Sas en zijn kompanen horen dat een goede productie ook in de wereld van de obscure metal een belangrijk punt is. Aratron heeft dat goed voor elkaar. Opener ‘The Dark Curse’ klinkt heerlijk vanuit het perspectief van black en death metal, rauw en ongepolijst, maar wie goed luistert, hoor ook alle partijen goed tot zijn recht komen. De schelle gitaren steken mooi af bij de baspartijen, waar op zijn beurt weer heerlijke loopjes in te vinden zijn. ‘Primal Shrine’ geeft daarbij goed weer dat de band het contrast tussen de zware vocalen en de ijzige screams van Ronald van Balen goed wilt benutten. Tevens wordt dat nummer opgesierd met een sterke gitaarsolo. De gitaarsolo’s in ‘Driven By Evil’, wat een lekkere, furieuze, snelle track is, en  afsluiter van Darkness Is Coming ‘The Glory Of Chaos’ zijn ingespeeld door Michel Wijngaard, die op zijn beurt weer gekend kan worden van de rockabilly band Razzle Dazzle. Die afsluiter van de plaat is overigens samen met de opener de langste track op Darkness Is Coming. Dat schept meer ruimte voor de andere facetten van de muziek. Aratron weet namelijk de schijf te sluiten met een stukje akkoorden waar een mooie donkere, mystieke sluier omheen hangt. Heerlijk om zo terug op aarde te worden gezet. Maurice Sas heeft het met zijn Aratron goed voor elkaar op Darkness Is Coming. Als alle mensen zich op deze manier door een computerspel zouden gaan laten inspireren dan komt er een overschot aan lekkere metalplaten. Dus, laat die eer maar aan Aratron. Zij verdienen het. Darkness Is Coming is een debuut waar de band trots op mag zijn. __________________________________________________ Voices from the Darkside ARATRON is the spirit of Saturn, capable of turning everything into stone and basically manipulating a strong magic based on Alchemy. In the Metal realm, this is a band coming from The Netherlands, formed by ex - OBTRUNCATION members, a band I remember by their debut album “The Callous Concept” from 1997, a good album of American styled Death Metal. I was expecting a quite similar effort here, and part of it is right. They do have that sound similar to IMMOLATION, SUFFOCATION and to lesser extent CANNIBAL CORPSE. But also I can sense some touches of Black Metal here and there. It reminds me of what SOULBURN is doing nowadays, a strong Death Metal base with some Black Metal elements. I like the way the production turned out, it has a raw edge that fits the music, while also being clear enough. I can also think of ASPHYX in some of the more doomy parts specially the aura of this one recalls “The Rack” a lot. Some very good use of solos here and there add class to this self-financed CD release. The band really shines in heaviness in the more mid-tempo songs like the killer 'Raise The Black'. The presentation is quite simple, yet fits them very well, and the cover art is also an indication of what you are about to experience. This is an album that grows on the listener. This is what the underground is all about, a band that is playing what they feel, and without the need of a label, decides to release this upon mankind. This is on my “to get” list without a doubt. And you should also make the same! __________________________________________________ Dutch Metal Maniac A happy 2017 to all and this first review of me celebrates all good things with doom/boom/ka-choom Metal. The quartet from Sliedrecht, South Holland, despite some lineup changes, have done ok for a long time with at least 3 other releases. Their newest is solid and guttural; mostly ‘guittaral’ (my own made up word here) as the axes seem to take over the sound. Vox is nearly non-existent and is too bad, as the album is powerful and has some great rhythms. Lead singer Ronald even notes others have ganged up on his vox as is shown on their Fb page, and takes it quite good humouredly. The about 2 second bassline into ‘Primal Shrine’ was good. The rest: meh. Impressed as I was with the album getting better, it’s a frigid uphill climb for me, but lovers of “Traumatizing Thrash Metal’ (haha love that one) will enjoy it immensely. ‘Slow Decay’ actually rocks with some glimmer of crunching power chords and some good slower tempos. ‘The Glory of Chaos’ is great! An outstanding intro and my favourite song here. Decent playing with some reminding of Slayer, Razor and Overkill for my likings. The axe work at about 03:36 kicks and there will definitely be happy times for those in their concert mosh. This is speed metal not thrash and very articulate. The outro at 04:46 to end is classic and puts some nice finishing nails into the woodwork. The rest of the songs are good and the titles are cool, lending themselves to some underpinnings in prog rock, due to the lengthier ones, such as ‘The Dark Curse’; a 6:25 plodding, moody, somewhat repetitive piece which is very good. I hear VoiVod in there and it impresses me. Again the near-absence of the voice is too bad as some lyrics would be nice. And since there’s not many liner notes anymore…. Overall, I find this a good album and worthy of a buy. If the band can keep up with the personnel changes then they will get some traction and move forward, I think. Turn the mixing knobs and get that voice back in there lads! Score: 75/100 __________________________________________________ Dutch Brutal Death Metal A Dutch band like Archgoat? Count me in! Aratron plays a combination of black/death/thrash metal. If you know Archgoat, you know what this album will sound like. A perfect balanced combination of 3 genres. After releasing 2 full length, Aratron surprises us with a whole new look. New logo, and a stunning artwork. Looks promising!   ‘The Darkness Is Coming’ contains 8 songs of mayhem. ‘The Dark Curse’ is the opening-track of the album. It gives a good feeling and sound of what to expect even though this is the blackest metal track of the bunch. The second track ‘Primal Shrine’ gives you a great idea what I meant with the Archgoat comparison. Many headbangable moments are scattered throughout the whole song which makes it very cool to listen to. After listening to the two previous songs either my speaker is terrible or the vocals really are distant in the mix of the album. That kind of bothers me by not properly hearing the vocalist screech.     The song ‘The Outsider’ is more of a heavy metal/ blackened thrash song. I wouldn’t prefer it that way but it certainly has some sick riffs scattered across the song. Throughout the album, it came to me that ‘The Darkness Is Coming’ is more of a blackened thrash album than a black/death/thrash album. It has more elements of thrash then I’ve expected.   Which isn’t bad but I’ve seen the album cover which prepared me on a black/death record instead of a blackened thrash record. The song ‘Driven By Evil’ has some chaotic blackened thrash riff work which sounds absolutely amazing. At the start of the album I started to review it like a blackened death metal record but now I’m reviewing it as a blackened thrash metal album. Life is full of surprises you know.   The whole album was full of surprises for me. Absolutely great and well produced songs are throughout the whole record. A good new step for Aratron. A beautiful new logo. A fresh new sound and a good new record. A solid 7.5 out of 10 from Dutch Brutal Death Metal Thrash __________________________________________________ Wandering Souls Drie jaar na The Recovery demo is de band uit Dordrecht terug en dit keer met een volledig album. Acht nummertjes, 38 minuten speeltijd. Netjes. Dat de band niet alleen op old school death metal meer leunt is direct bij de opener al te merken. De invloeden van rauwe black metal liggen er dik bovenop. Zowel in het gitaarwerk als in de zang. Dit is wellicht een bewuste keus geweest van componist Maurice Sas. Er is mooi contrast tussen black en death als het album vordert. Het klinkt into your face en duister. Er wordt sterk gemusiceerd ook. Het ritmewerk is mooi constant, waarbij de drums van Damiën Kerpentier (ook in Sepiroth), naast het baswerk van Maurice, ook veel bijdraagt. Het gitaarsolowerk van Michel Wijngaard (ex-Concrete Earth, ex-Obtruncation) is ook fraai te noemen. Het ritmegitaarwerk heeft lekker dat old school rauwe randje wat ik erg gaaf vind om te horen. Niks gladgestreken door de productie. Gewoon zoals het hoort. De zang van Ronald balanceert tussen rauwe verstaanbare grunts en verstaanbare screams heen en weer en vormt mooi de brug in de muzikale combinatie die de band probeert te bereiken. Past prima. Het artwork tenslotte, is door z'n eenvoud, een opvallende voorkant. Het is strak getekend en past goed bij de sfeer die het album moet uitstralen. Het complete plaatje. Het enige wat ontbreekt is een undergroundlabel. De band heeft potentie en hier zit zeker meer in. Keep up the good work! De cd is te bestellen via de bandcamp-pagina van de band. Go support your local underground! __________________________________________________ Brutalism Hailing from Dordrecht, the Netherlands, and featuring (ex-) members of Sepiroth, Damnable, X-tinction and Obtruncation, Aratron have released their debut album with “Darkness Is Coming”. Aratron describes their music as “traumatizing thrash/death metal” with this I disagree, I would describe their music as deathened black metal with a strong latter part of the 90’s feel. This is reflected in the band name: “Aratron is the spirit of Saturn. He can apparently turn anything into stone, turn treasure into coal and coal into treasure, give powerful familiars, teach alchemy and magic, reconciles the spirits of the earth, make one invisible, make the barren fruitful and prolong life”. It is also reflected in their song titles: 'Darkness Is Coming' (Dorkness is cumming, hehehe), 'Driven By Evil' and 'The Dark Curse' to name a few. But foremost it is apparent in their music, the gritty, gnarly and fizzy guitar and bass sound, the riffs are very often reminiscent of Marduk, as well are the hectic drums and straightforward song structures. Sure there is also a strong death metal influence with the frequent use of hammer blasts and some of the more groovier riffs are reminiscent of Incantation, Asphyx and Obituary. But hey, the music is straightforward, catchy aggressive with a nice and dirty sound. Only slight point of criticism is the drum sound, it is a bit thin sounding and lacks warmth and fatness. There are also some sloppy timings in some grooves where the ride cymbal is not always 100% tightly played, but sometimes this also contributes a bit to the old school chaotic black metal feel. Overall I like this record very much, it grows on me every time I listen to it. __________________________________________________ Metallian Aratron is a one man band from The Netherlands formed way back in 2000. Maurice Sas split up with band-mates in 2002 but resurrected the band in 2008 and has released two demos prior to Darkness Is Coming. Still going as a one-man band and session members DIS is eight songs long with Sas doing the guitars and bass but getting help for lead guitars on six of the songs, that help being in the form of Michel Wijngaard. Ronald van Baren on vocals and Damien Kerpentier on drums round out the musicians on this release. Whilst describing the style as death metal the opener, The Dark Curse, is more straight up speedy black metal. After Primal Shrine and by the third song, Slow Decay, the pace slows down and a thicker and heavier sound starts to emerge. The song has an ‘80s or ‘90s doomy death feel to it. Raise The Black is a shorter and faster paced song. The Outsider is mostly grinding. Driven By Evil speedy black metal again, perhaps befitting the old- school tag. Poisoned Soul is as chaotic or more as the rest of the album. The Glory Of Chaos is the closer and at nearly seven minutes closes the album well, fast and heavy, black and death minus the final two minutes which are outro like. Welcome the darkness! __________________________________________________ Pest Webzine Debut album from Aratron, 8 tracks in almost 40 minutes of playing time. Since y last meeting with this band's music it seems it became a one man project of Maurice Sas, with three other musicians helping him out in studio and live as session musicians, so by all counts we're dealing with a one man show on this debut album. And since Maurice is basically a bass player that becomes pretty obvious when you start listening to this album as it starts with a bass solo intro that reminded me of Paul Speckman's solo on Master's debut from 1990, and the bass lines are damn incisive and important to the whole equation here, increasing the intensity and heaviness of the compositions. Despite the music being advertised as Thrash Death Metal, I'd say what we get here is a combination of Black Metal and Death Metal tracks, with some leaning more on the Black side and others on the Death side, but all of them keeping the same level of intensity and anger throughout the whole album. It sounds and feels totally old-school, with a energetic Punk feeling at times, or an ugly, sloppy Doom Death atmosphere at other, enhanced by a oppressive and organic production. Interesting album fans of old-school fast paced Extreme Metal will appreciate; comes with an 8 pages booklet featuring all lyrics.
